Background of the study
Community forums are crucial platforms for dialogue, decision-making, and cultural exchange. In Abeokuta, Yoruba community forums bring together diverse groups to discuss local issues, share cultural heritage, and foster social cohesion. Interpreter-mediated exchanges are central to these forums, enabling participants who speak different dialects or languages to engage in meaningful dialogue (Olatunji, 2023). Interpreters in these settings must not only translate language but also bridge cultural and contextual gaps, ensuring that messages are conveyed accurately and respectfully. Strategies such as consecutive interpretation, summarization, and cultural mediation are employed to enhance communication effectiveness. However, challenges such as varying interpreter proficiency, speed of exchange, and dialectal differences can impede the clarity and impact of discussions (Akinola, 2024). This study examines the role of interpreters in facilitating exchanges during Yoruba community forums in Abeokuta by analyzing recorded sessions, interviewing forum participants, and evaluating interpreter performance. The aim is to identify best practices and propose measures to improve the quality of interpreter-mediated communication in community settings.

Statement of the problem
Interpreter-mediated exchanges in Yoruba community forums in Abeokuta often face challenges such as misinterpretation of colloquial expressions, dialectal variations, and inconsistent translation practices (Olatunji, 2023). These issues can lead to communication breakdowns and misunderstandings among community members, ultimately affecting the forum’s effectiveness. The lack of standardized interpreter training and evaluation further complicates efforts to ensure clear and culturally sensitive communication (Akinola, 2024). This study aims to identify the primary obstacles in interpreter-mediated exchanges and to recommend strategies for enhancing interpreter performance in community forums.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the quality of interpreter-mediated exchanges in Yoruba community forums.
  2. To identify challenges affecting interpretation accuracy.
  3. To propose strategies for improving interpreter performance.

Research questions:

  1. What challenges do interpreters face in community forums?
  2. How do these challenges affect communication clarity?
  3. What measures can improve interpreter-mediated exchanges?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines interpreter-mediated communication in Yoruba community forums, providing valuable insights for community organizers, interpreter trainers, and policymakers. Improved interpreter performance will foster more effective community dialogue and cultural cohesion in Abeokuta (Olatunji, 2023; Akinola, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to interpreter-mediated exchanges in Yoruba community forums in Abeokuta and does not extend to other communication settings.

Definitions of terms:

  • Interpreter-mediated exchanges: Communication facilitated by professional interpreters.
  • Community forums: Meetings where community members discuss local issues.
  • Yoruba language: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
